A three-year doctoral grant is funded by the Regione Emilia-Romagna (for a graduate student working on activities with high level qualification) from the European Social Fund with a project entitled “Development and optimization of bio-colorants from agri-food byproducts for the construction of architecturally integrated solar cells for sustainable housing", scientific advisors: Prof. Alessandro Massi, Prof. Stefano Caramori.

This project envisages the training of a scientific/professional figure having expertise in the second-generation valorization of agri-food by-products (organic pigments) applied to the realization of solar cells. The project falls within the Emilia-Romagna declared value chains concerning the development of photoelectrochemical devices for conversion of solar energy and, in general, of the indoor and outdoor architectural light energy. This is fully in line with the aims of the value chain LOW CARBON ECONOMY (LowCarbon ER) regarding the transition of the regional economy to a better environmental sustainability. At the same time, the project has a bearing on the value chain AGRIFOOD (SPES, Valorization of byproducts and waste) which focuses on the use of waste and byproducts from agro-food industry for the production of medium/high-added value molecules, namely bio-colorants and their chemical derivatives, able to absorb and convert solar energy into electricity in transparent photoelectrochemical cells based on TiO2 (titanium dioxide) substrates. Besides, the visual characteristics of the solar cells which will be built (transparency, available color palette) provide for their integration as architectural features. This takes place within the framework of home energy recovery, with cells being possibly used as outdoor devices (integration in windows and glass walls) and indoor apparatus for the intelligent energy management (gobo, etc.), and also as energy source for smart home, sensor applications, rechargeable devices etc. (Value Chain G2B, Energy Efficiency and Sustainability in Construction). It should be noted that these solar cells give beneficial use, compared to the ones based on silicon, in soft light (autumn and winter months in the region) and diffuse light conditions, allowing recovery of in-house low energy with an efficiency greater than 20%.

Molecular crystals are ideal models for the study of molecular interaction forces that are responsible for the different aggregation states of matter and which are important for supramolecular recognition processes relevant in chemistry, material science and biochemistry of the drug-receptor and enzyme-substrate interactions. The study of crystal packing within extended series of crystals (either designed ad hoc or derived from systematic investigation of crystallographic databases, also possibly integrated with thermodynamic and spectroscopic data as well as computational calculations) allows for the identification of intermolecular recognition forces that enable molecule to be part of stable aggregated species. The data analysis is performed with LFER (linear free-energy relationships) and structural correlation methods aimed at the definition of the reaction pathways and the identification of structure/properties relationships.

Study And Characterization Of Molecular Magnets

The project deals with the study of the interactions between metal centers within polynuclear molecular complexes. Polynuclear complexes are multi-functional materials and, among them, those containing copper are particularly interesting due to their multiple properties. Indeed, they can mimic active sites of natural biomolecules, they can interact with DNA, or they can be used as innovative materials in chemistry and in nanotechnologies thanks to their featuring electronic, magnetic, and redox properties.

Goals

The main goal is to start a systematic study of the magnetic properties of bi- and tri-nuclear copper and nickel complexes. The interest towards these systems arises from the fact that oxygen atoms of specific ligands can act as bridges between copper centers. Since there is a strong relationship between the molecular structure (particularly metal coordination and structure of bridges) and the nature and intensities of the magnetic interactions between unpaired electrons in the metal centers, an accurate choice of organic ligands may induce a direct modulation of the magnetic properties.

Instruments and Methods

Development of synthetic strategies for the preparation of polynuclear complexes;

Structural characterization with X-ray diffraction techniques;

This line of research focuses on the use of biocatalyzed processes for the production of optically active chiral molecules and biologically active compounds derived from natural products. Typically, biocatalysts are enzymes of bacterial origin which are extracted and purified or more often cloned and expressed in suitable recombinant bacteria. Enzymes are ideal catalysts for the development of processes with a low environmental impact, due to their proteinous nature, their ability to promote transformations in aqueous media (but not only) at temperature < 100 °C and, above all, their selectivity (which limits byproducts formation). The sustainability of biocatalyzed transformations may be further expanded through catalyst immobilization onto natural (synthetic) polymer matrices by covalent bonding. An immobilized enzyme has some distinguishing advantages, such as greater stability and ease of separation from the reaction mixture, which allow its reuse in several reaction cycles (with clearly economic benefits).

Goals

Development of synthetic methodologies based on the use of carboligases (C-C bond-forming reactions), dehydrogenases (reduction of prochiral ketones) and lipases (transesterification reactions).

Study of reactions involving the combined use of diverse enzymes or enzymes and organocatalysts.

Study of biocatalyzed processes in both batch and continuous flow modes in the presence of immobilized enzymes.
